Attention MEI volunteers,
Effective immediately, Sterling Backcheck (MyBackcheck) is no longer able to provide Criminal Record Checks (CRC) that include the Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). As you know the VSC is a mandatory Hockey Nova Scotia screening requirement for all volunteers. Instead, Halifax Regional Police is now offering a new online screening process through Triton. Here is the link below:

Key Points:
- HRP will only process CRC/VSC for residents of HRM. Residents outside of HRM must apply through the police service responsible for their area.
- A HNS letter is required to be eligible for the reduced fee.
- If fingerprints are required, applicants will receive instructions for next steps.
- Deadline is December 1, 2026

Shift Forward Course:
The Shift Forward is Hockey Canada's new education program, replacing the former Respect in Sport program. It was built with extensive input from the hockey community, and it's designed to be engaging, modern, and specific to your role as a hockey parent. The goal is simple: to help everyone involved in the game, including players, coaches, officials, and families, contribute to a safe, positive, and welcoming hockey environment, both on and off the ice.
The Shift Forward course is expanding for the 2026-27 season. The Parent course is now a required course for parents new to hockey (one parent/guardian per family). Note this also applies to families who started hockey in the 2025-26 season. The deadline to complete the course is Dec 1, 2026.
