MEIFHA Presents Development 2020 - 2021

2020-11-04

Now that evaluations are complete and balancing is done we would like to welcome you and your teams to the Metro East Inferno Female Hockey Association 2020-2021 season. We would also like to thank you all for stepping up to volunteer to help out within our association this season… It is greatly appreciated!
As you know this season isn’t going to look like any other, but Metro East Inferno is extremely excited to have formed a working relationship with the Dalhousie Tigers Women’s and Men’s hockey programs. Our association has secured three hours of ice a week that we can dedicate strictly to on-ice player / coach development.

Below is the season development schedule. Please review.
  • Each session will be a shared ice time with another team.
  • Dalhousie Tigers will be responsible to plan / organize the practice plan. They will have one lead instructor and two assistants on the ice. (Similar to September development sessions)
  • Your team will treat these sessions as regular practices and attendance is expected by players and coaches.
  • Each team will have their coaching staff on ice to help the Dal coaches run the practice. To a max of 50 due to Covid guidelines.
  • Teams will be responsible to Covid screen / track and secure dressing room chaperons for each of their sessions.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Thanks for all your support.

Regards,

Derek McCarthy,

Safety Procedures for 2020 MEIFHA Evaluations

2020-09-29

Hello MEIFHA families,

As we head into evaluations on October 3, it is important we review some important safety procedures. We also want to THANK EVERYONE for the attention to safety during the September development sessions and especially the volunteers who stepped up as chaperones and desk support.

As you are likely aware, Nova Scotia’s Office of Public Health has announced some additional privileges for sports and arts-based activities beginning October 1. This is exciting but also adds additional logistical steps for every association in Nova Scotia. Hockey Nova Scotia has updated their Rebound Plan to reflect these changes – it is IMPORTANT that all MEIFHA families review this plan and discuss it with players.

If you have thoroughly reviewed the Rebound Plan, you will see that each association carries a lot of responsibility to help ensure the following.
  • Association board members must orientate to the new COVID-19 related safety precautions
  • Associations must liaise with Hockey Nova Scotia and the facilities used by our association to keep on top of changes & requirements
  • Associations must identify an association Safety Rep and Team Safety Reps to share information with families regarding what is required by Public Health & Hockey Nova Scotia and conduct/track COVID-19 screening
  • Communicate what is expected of all those interacting with association activities – all volunteers, coaches, players and spectators must comply with the safety requirements
  • COVID-19 screening and registration must occur before EVERY activity – this is everyone’s “ticket to play” whether you are a volunteer, coach, player, evaluator or spectator
MEIFHA does feel once teams are in place and team safety reps are assigned, the job of sharing information with families, screening and registration of screening will become easier and more manageable for everyone. Saying that, this task is much more difficult with broader groupings such as with development sessions and the upcoming evaluations where groups will often change.

As a result of the strict requirements, and based on what our volunteers can manage for these larger and changing groups, PLEASE REVIEW the following important information.
  • MEIFHA CANNOT ACCOMMODATE SPECTATORS for evaluations – the screening logistics and responsibility is too much for volunteers to manage for these larger and changing groups
  • The screening survey IS THE “TICKET TO PLAY” for ALL coaches, evaluators, volunteers and players – without screening being completed electronically PRIOR to arriving at the rink, participation cannot be guaranteed as MEIFHA will have limited resources to screen on site
  • All volunteers must be registered on the MEIFHA spreadsheet as a coach, evaluator or volunteer desk/chaperone – if you are not on the spreadsheet you will not receive a screening survey
  • Players who require assistance with equipment/skates and who are UNDER 13 years of age may be assisted in the hallway outside the dressing room prior to and after each evaluation session
  • Nobody except REGISTERED CHAPERONES are permitted in the dressing rooms
  • We highly recommend those volunteering during evaluations to watch the Safety Rep Training Module on YouTube. Once teams are formed, team Safety Reps will be required to complete the Hockey Canada – Planning a Safety Return to Hockey on the eHockey platform
  • Everyone must WEAR A MASK as per Public Heath guidelines
We know evaluations can be stressful for some and these added limitations may cause concern. We need to stress that all of these decisions have been made based on safety and to help limit the burden of this process on our volunteers, who already contribute hundreds of hours each year.

Let’s all continue to work together to show that MEIFHA will be a leader in prevention and committed to helping ensure safe and continuous play for the 2020-2021 season. We’ll be sending out safety bulletins/reminders over the next few days with additional rink information, short reminders and easy graphics you can save to your smartphone photos. Watch for the evaluation schedule email and please contact us if you have any questions. Thank you!

HOCKEY NOVA SCOTIA TASK FORCE LAUNCHES PUBLIC SURVEY

2020-09-29

DARTMOUTH – The Hockey Nova Scotia Diversity & Inclusion Task Force today launched an innovative digital survey seeking public feedback in making the game of hockey more welcoming, diverse and inclusive for everyone. The task force is particularly interested in hearing from communities traditionally underrepresented in the game.

“There are reasons why communities of colour, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ2+ and new Canadians are not picking hockey, and we really need to hear from these individuals in order to inform and effect positive change,” said Dean Smith, Chair of the Hockey Nova Scotia Diversity & Inclusion Task Force.

The information will assist the task force in making informed recommendations to the board of directors on addressing racism and discrimination in the sport.

The Diversity & Inclusion Task Force was formed in December 2019 in response to local and international incidents involving discrimination in the game. The group made a recommendation earlier this year for the creation of a position on the Hockey Nova Scotia Board of Directors dedicated to issues surrounding diversity and inclusion. In keeping with its public statement that “racism and discrimination have no place in our game”, Hockey Nova Scotia unanimously approved that recommendation and created a seat at the board table.

“This was unprecedented in the country, which demonstrates their strong leadership in this area,” says Smith.

The survey can be found at hockeynovascotia.ca and will remain open to the public until November 1, 2020.

We are happy to inform you that our 2020 Lace’Em Up Hockey Registration Grant is now open. Applications will close on September 30th or until funds run out. Please encourage your players to apply early as funds are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have updated our funding policies for this season. We are currently accepting, reviewing, and awarding grants for the 2020–2021 hockey season but we will not be sending any monies until the end of September. All cheques will be sent directly to the hockey associations along with a list of players that were accepted. During this unprecedented time, we will wait and see how the pandemic unfolds in the fall and make sure that our recipients will still be able to play organized hockey at the end of the September. Unfortunately, the outbreak had a huge negative impact on all kinds of sports. At Lace’Em Up, we are optimistic and hope for a great hockey season.

If you have any questions please email us at info@laceemup.ca.  We hope everyone stays safe and healthy.

MEIFHA Launches Preseason Development

2020-08-19

Metro East Inferno Female Hockey Association is pleased to offer Preseason Development Sessions to all divisions (U9 – U18) during the month of September.  These sessions will provide our players with the opportunity to get on the ice prior to the anticipated October 1st Player Evaluation date as outlined in the Hockey Nova Scotia Rebound Plan

Canada's National Women’s Hockey Team Head Coach and Dalhousie University Women's Hockey Program Head Coach, Troy Ryan and Dalhousie University's Men’s Hockey Team Head Coach, Chris Donnelly will be planning and featuring in our sessions. Their involvement provides an exceptional development opportunity for our players..

Goaltenders who register will additionally be provided with 3 one-hour goaltending-specific sessions, with Todd Bengert of Upper Echelon Goaltending

Group sizes will be dictated by the most up-to-date Return To Play information provided by Hockey NS.  We will attempt to create groups based on where girls played last season to facilitate the sessions.  Unfortunately, due to many important logistical protocols and other tedious administrative tasks that are required to facilitate these sessions, MEIFHA will not be accommodating any grouping requests.

Six sessions (2 per week): one-hour on-ice development
Cost:  $100

SCHEDULE (*.PDF file)

To register, simply add the Preseason Development Sessions during the regular registration process.  Spaces will fill quickly and although MEIFHA will attempt to add sessions if interest warrants, there is no guarantee more ice will be available, so please don't delay!

2020 - 2021 REGISTRATION for Preseason Development Sessions will close September 1st.  Spaces are filling up quickly!

Yours in hockey,

Metro East Inferno FHA Executive

*** Please note that Metro East Inferno will not be offering traditional Conditioning Camps ahead of the player evaluations.
